Modern artwork purchased in Provincetown, Mass, serves as the focal point in the living space. interior designer Linda Woodrum says: “Stone is a powerful element because it’s heavy, bold and massive, We needed to find a piece that worked to hold the eye and not let the stone dominate.” The Cabinet doors, set on a concealed hinge system, recess to reveal a Viera 42-inch HD LCD Energy Star-rated television and Blu-Ray high-definition DVD player. A custom alcove above the television displays a vintage boat model, purchased in Plymouth and customized to fit the 4-foot-wide space. An installation of colored Lucite makes an impression as one ascends the stairs. The modern-art piece, discovered at a gallery along Boston’s Newbury Street, pulls in the home’s color palette. “It was the most exciting find ever,” says interior designer Linda Woodrum. A bookshelf, custom-crafted by MacKenzie Brothers to camouflage a return air grill, houses a collection of curios, books and pottery.

Here is a Casa Familia House Architectural by Kevin deFreitas Architect in San Diego, California. This House was designed by Kevin deFreitas for his beloved family. A reinterpretation of quintessential Southern Californian courtyard houses; this is a modestly sized home that lives much bigger than it really is by thoughtfully opening up to, and engaging the landscape and wonderfully temperate coastal climate. It is a home that simultaneously looking towards the future (technologically feature rich), while remembering the low-tech comfort strategies of the past, a time before air conditioning and forced air units existed. The goal of this project was to design and construct a highly efficient home that would employ passive and active strategies to significantly reduce energy, water, and resource consumption all while delivering a modern, comfortable and livable home for a young family of six.

Through concerted research, experimentation and a good measure of faith, the house proved a success consuming 65% less electricity than state mandated standards, and 55% less water than homes of comparable size without sacrificing comfort or aesthetics. From an architectural standpoint it was important to dispel the common public misperception that efficiency and conservation has to look “hippie” or alternative.
